PLATTSBURGH, NY __ The Rotary Club of Plattsburgh hopes the 26th annual Rotary International Fishing Classic June 1-3 , 2012 will be another record-breaking year. During the silver anniversary tourney in 2010, Vincent Dattilio of South Burlington, Vt. caught a 15 lb., 12 oz. lake trout on Day 2 of the tourney. Its was the second consecutive year for a record-breaking laker, and Dattilio's 25 consecutive year fishing in the classic. 2011 was not a good year from the Rotary International Fishing Classic. The tournament had to be cancelled due to the high water level on Lake Champlain

Bonnie Black, Rotary Fishing Classic chair, said the Rotary Club is planning on another great fishing tourney this coming year. “We hear from anglers all over the Northeastern United States and Canada that they enjoy fishing in our tournament. While some are real competitors, others love to participate in it because of the friendships they have made during the past 26 years.”

Black said the tourney used to bring more than 700 anglers to Lake Champlain for the three day event. In 2010, 71 teams and 545 anglers (including 17 youths under the age of 16) from eight states and the Province of Ontario, participated in the three-day tournament.

A LITTLE HISTORY…

n 1986, this tournament began as the first spring tournament on Lake Champlain, which was sponsored by the American Lung Association.

The Plattsburgh Rotary Club took over sponsorship of the tournament from the American Lung Association in its third year.

That was 1989 and was steered by the Rotary Club's Past President Tim Ayres until 1995 when Joan LaPier and Bonnie Black replaced him as co-chairs. When Joan became Club President, she was replaced by Dennis Cregan who co-chaired for three years.

In 2005, Jack Prim stepped in as Bonnie’s co-chair for the year. Since 2006, Bonnie has chaired the Tournament and the committee.
