An Update From Thailand, Feb 9, 2005:
The weather is "rahn" hot. People
are complaining that summer is arriving much faster in the winter season than
usual .Usually are classes are held in the school library but we are now meeting
in the AC media room instead.
And speaking of news, when we arrived at school on Monday the Vice principal
greeted us with the big news - a Western toilet had been installed just
for Miriam. You don't know how grateful she is.
We are celebrating the Chinese New Year today. Since our Thai family are
Chinese we told the school that we are Chinese and had to celebrate with
our "family". We are sure they believed us.
School was in session today but most students are Chinese so many would
not attend school.
Preparation for the New Year included special sticky rice desserts,
fruits,
and food was prepared to be offered to their ancestors on New Year's Day.
The family all gathered , Surin and Ju, Another brother and wife and
children arrived and gave us both beautiful orchid wrist lei. Sister 'Aye" and
another sister and husband and children also arrived. And of course
Suwat, Ray and children were there since they live here. Also an uncle, their
father and mother were here. It was quite a family gathering and we were
glad to be included. On this special occasion the father did the cooking.
At 10:00 am we went up to the second floor to the family altar where we
all took three incense sticks , knelt and paid respect to their ancestors. The
altar was covered food, large platters of fruit. a goose, and many other
foods .Later the children were given red envelopes (red is for good luck)
with money in them. Several days ago we had dinner with Dr Har and Ratana-
Ranee's parents- who gave us a New year's gift of apples. Their YE
students
left after dinner with the other YE syudents in the District for an
overnite trip to Phuket to help with the work that needs to be done there.
Last week we participated in an "English Camp" sponsored by our Rotaary
Club. For two days , 275 students in a temple school played games in
English , sang songs in English and did exercises in English. You should
have seen us doing the " Hokey-Pokey" We became instant celebrities - our
autographs were sought by many of the students.
Our school loaned us to the temple school for the 2 days. By the way there
are over 60 schools in the city of Nakhon Pathom.
Happy Chinese New Year to everyone, Nick and Miriam
An Update From Thailand, Jan.29, 2005:
Hello all,
The weather has been very pleasant here, cool for some Thais but wonderful for
us. This morning, Saturday, we ate breakfast ( boiled rice for Nick and cereal
for Miriam) on the covered outdoor platform between the kitchen and the fish
pond. The 2 cooks were beginning to prepare lunch after going to the market on a
motor bike, the laundress was doing special hand wash although they do have a
washing machine and dryer in a building in the back yard. The family and the 15
employees were coming and going as we had breakfast. The family business is
selling new and used car and truck parts. School is going well. It our 6th
different school we have taught in and is located about 5 miles out of the city
with 721 secondary students and 5 English Teachers. We each teach 9 classes a
week of about 35 students each. They love singing so between teaching English
conversation we also teach the Song, "I See The Moon" The students as well as
the teachers like to talk to us between classes. We have attend Rotary each
week, met old friends and helped deliver milkfrom a Rotary Grant to
undernourished and underweight children. Also, we with several Rotarians gave
oral polio vaccine to 550 students under 5 years of age in a nursery school.
There has not been a polio case in 6 years in Thailand. We also attended the
Rotary Family night and were hugged and given roses by many old and new friends.
The tsunami of course fills the newspaper with heart breaking stories and so
does the general election on Feb 7th. It is especially interesting to see news
in depth about Southeast Asia and their perspective on news from ourcountry.
Our Thai Family is well, the mother, father, daughter "A", son, Suwat and wife
Ray, their children Nat, 9 years, Manee, 5 years and Neat, 3 years. Suwat and
Ray run the family business.
Our warmest greetings to all of you, Nick and Miriam
