The Bulletin -- May 13, 2009 (#990)

Program: Hill and Hollow Program, “The Baltimore Consort.”

Hill and Hollow's: The Baltimore Consort

The Baltimore Consort is one of the most eminent early music ensembles in the world. Although they were founded in Baltimore, time has sent them to far reaching places across the country. Members of the ensemble have traveled from as far as California, Oregon, and Michigan. The Consort has 17 recordings on a major label and has received many awards for their performances.

Community Outreach The Baltimore Consort is here to do some community outreach. Tomorrow they will be at the Plattsburgh Public High School where they will perform for Social Studies and French classes. They will spend the evening at Lake Forest and tomorrow will see them off to Chazy Schools for more performances. The Consort will find time between stops to participate in interviews with Public Radio and a PBS recording.

Champlain Quadricentennial Hill and Hollow’s entire 2008/2009 season have been dedicated to Champlain Quadricentennial events in one way or another.

What you will hear today is the music Samuel D. Champlain would have known and loved in his time. As a true lover of music, he was the founder of the “Order of Good Times” - a social club begun in 1602.

This Week:

  • Welcome back Frank Hamilton and Charlie Lewis. Good to see both of you.
  • Lee Salzman has a birthday today. Happy Birthday to you!
  • May 29th is the Paul Harris Dinner. Carmen Carpentier believes the cost will be $35 per ticket. Cocktails begin at 5:30pm with dinner to follow at 6:30pm. There is a great menu planned with three selections (invitations will come soon). Please join the club in celebrating our Paul Harris Fellows.
  • June 5th-7th is the Rotary Fishing Tournament. Bonnie Black announced that there are still openings for volunteers. Feel free to bring a competent non-Rotarian with you to help.
  • June 10th is the Rotary Golf Outing. PP Marty Mannix made sure members know that you don’t have to be an expert golfer and all members will (hopefully) go home with a prize. Marty is still gathering donated prizes, so please help him out if you can contribute.

Seasoned Member Talk: Sonia Long

New Member Induction Ceremony: Alice Church
John Prim was honored to announce that Alice Church is Rotary’s newest member. She was sponsored by Bob Parks. New members increase our effectiveness as a club and further spreads the good work we do. Alice is shown above with Bob Parks, President Steve Frederick and John Prim.

Sonia Long came to Plattsburgh as Director of the Plattsburgh Public Library in January of 2003. It was minus twenty degrees. She became a Rotarian when she was a librarian at Hudson Valley. Sonia admits to being part of the “Me” generation in that she spent a lot of years doing what she wanted. Eventually she realized how much it meant to her to give something back to the community and she joined Rotary. The Hudson Valley Rotary Club was very small and was able to perform acts of kindness for individual families such as pay rent if they fell behind. Here the club is much larger and Sonia has enjoyed participating in many activities such as fishing with Dr. Ange Lamariana, Highway Cleanup with Jay Kerley, attending District Meetings (in 2010 Rotary International will be in Montreal. Sign up if you would like to attend). Sonia likes the fact that Rotary helps people worldwide. She was in Bulgaria in September visiting a former stock broker (a story for another time). She visited with the Rotary Club there and was pleased to see them moving into the international scene.

Visiting Rotarians: Charlie Lewis

Guests: Barbara Way (Elle Berger), Bob Kidwell (Bob Smith), Joshua Kretser (Ita Bullard), Scott Hayden (Kristen Shives).

Happy Dollars:

  • Kevin Killeen announced that his daughter received an academic achievement award from Clinton Community College. His second dollar was to say that she’s going to graduate this weekend. He is thrilled!
  • Stan Ransom announced that May 14th at 6:30pm the library will host Atlantic Crossing, a Vermont folk band. It is a free event, but seats are limited. Also, the library was honored receive a donation from Ita Bullard. The library now has an amazing painting of Michael Jackson. Third, the program “Take a Bite out of Reading” is going to take place on July 25th at the Champlain Mall. Still needed are a few volunteers (judges, time keepers, readers and more). It is from 10am-3pm. See Stan for more information on how you can help.
  • Ita Bullard announced she is having her well repaired and is excited about finally having plenty of great water.
  • Bonnie Black announced that May 13th at the Elks Lodge BHSN will celebrate 135 years of helping the community. Congratulations!
