Program: John Bernardi and Al Sweenor -- Rotary Fishing Tournament

John Bernardi and Al Sweenor told the club everything they needed to know about volunteering at the weigh stations during the tournament.

Every station has a 10x10 canopy to keep the weather off. It’s easy to set up and is a good place to start. Next, unpack your tub. The tubs contain all of the materials you will need, but not everything you might want. Bernardi said to set up the scale first, then set the clear tote on the scale. Set out the paperwork, pens, pins and hats (for sale) then sit back, relax and enjoy the view.

When fishermen bring in their fish, you zero out the scale. Set the empty tote on then hit the “tare” button, and when the scale reads “0.00” they set the fish in the tote. You take a measurement in pounds and ounces (i.e. 7 lbs., 7.5 oz).

The breeze may make it fluctuate up and down before it reads zero, but be patient and it will get there. When measuring the length of the fish, measure from the tip of the tail to the nose. Feel the length of the stomach for weights or sinkers that shouldn’t be there. Punch a hole in the back dorsal fin before the fish is released and be sure to note any lamprey damage.

Registrants have the option of having a Team Membership. They will want to have their fish weighed in the team category as well as the individual. In order for anglers to be counted as a team, they must have paid as a team. Take their information/request regardless, and Bonnie or Keith will know who is registered as a team. Keep in mind, every person on the boat must be pre-registered.

There are three forms that should be completed for each weigh-in. One is a duplicate that is an official weigh-in form for individuals. Fill this out completely, and give the yellow copy to the angler. Second, fill out the team form and finally, the three-fish combo form. The three fish combo is a special being offered this year only. A single angler weighing in a total of one fish (lake trout, salmon and walleye) in each of the three categories that does not go over 25 pounds will win $250. The forms are self explanatory and easy to complete.

Be sure to call headquarters with any changes to the leader board, and keep your own board updated with the top scores. Changes are reported from headquarters at the top of the hour on the marine radio.

If you are part of the last crew on Sunday, please pack everything back into the totes and drop it all off at headquarters (Clare and Carl’s Dockside).

Things you may want to bring not included in totes:

  • Table for the scale
  • Food/beverage
  • Sun block
  • Tunes
  • Cooler
  • Camp chairs
  • Cell phone for official times
  • Digital Camera
  • Rain Gear if needed
