Program: Assemblywoman Janet Duprey—Statewide Constitutional Convention
It was no surprise when Assemblywoman Janet Duprey lamented about government shenanigans taking place in Albany. Like many people in the room, she too is fed up with the political process which is holding up legislation.
In an attempt to move toward positive changes, a statewide convention could be used as a means for sharing ideas and information about the political process with citizen delegates.
The convention is not a place for politicians or lobbyists. It is simply a call to interested citizens to develop potential solutions to the problems they see impeding progress.
The convention is a two year process. Although the convention is scheduled to take place in 2017, it has to get past legislation, which Assemblywoman Duprey said will be a heavy lift. If it is passed, it will go on the ballot in November (2010) and voters will decide if the convention will move forward.
Assemblywoman Duprey got involved with the convention after learning about the results of a Chamber of Commerce survey. Ninety-six percent of respondents wanted a Property Tax Cap, and 87 percent wanted to see a State Spending Cap. Debt reform, elimination of unfunded mandates, independent redistricting commission, and succession planning all require discussion.
“We have an unelected Governor, an unelected Lieutenant Governor, an unelected Comptroller and an unelected United States Senator,” said Duprey. “Something is wrong with this.” The statewide convention would hopefully address some of these issues.
