COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS
The Plattsburgh Rotary Club conducts many projects in the local communities. Many members provide expertise and knowledge gained in their businesses in committees while others seek participation on various committees for their own enjoyment while all in the spirit of giving back to the community.
Members of the Plattsburgh Rotary Club are encouraged to participate on several committees. Here brief descriptions of their focus:
CLUB SERVICE/ADMINISTRATION
CLUB HISTORY COMMITTEE
This committee records and maintains significant activities of the club both written and photographic.
CONSTITUTION & BY-LAWS COMMITTEE
Members are responsible for distributing the club constitution and by-laws and revising as deemed appropriate
FINANCE COMMITTEE
The Finance Committee reviews the finances and budget of the club.
NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE
The Nominations Committee prepares a slate of candidates for membership on the Board of Directors and officers of the club
PAST PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL
Past Presidents of the club will meet periodically to assess the ‘state of the club’ and advise the current President in procedures, ideas and communal wisdom.
WEEKLY MEETINGS:
ROTARY INFORMATION COMMITTEE/BULLETIN/ASSIGNMENTS
This committee dispenses Rotary information to the membership via the weekly Bulletin and assigns members, on a rotation basis, to the various weekly tasks.
BLESSING SUB-COMMITTEE
Members provide an interfaith message at the beginning of our meetings from inspirational, motivational and religious sources.
MUSIC COMMITTEE
This committee arranges for appropriate music at meetings and selected functions of the club.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE
The Program Committee meets monthly and arranges for speakers at weekly club meetings and ascertains members' interests.
ROTARY STORE COMMITTEE
This committee maintains, displays and sells Rotary-related items for sale to the club membership at weekly meetings/lunches.
MEMBERSHIP
CLASSIFICATION, DEVELOPMENT, RETENTION AND NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION
The committee recruits prospective members, educates club members on requirements for and obligations as well as privileges of Rotary membership to effectively identify qualified candidates, promotes a membership drive, coordinates with Public Relations for materials needed to recruit, considers applications for membership, brings names to the Board for approval, and encourages each new member to recruit a new member within the first 6 months of membership.
The Committee compiles unfilled classifications to assure compliance with RI classification/ membership standards and diversity in the club.
This committee organizes and conducts new member orientation at least four times a year; assigns a mentor to each new member; develops activities for new members to accomplish within first six (6) months of membership; personally contacts members (of any longevity) who miss meetings to determine if there is a problem and encourage attendance; establishes a member recognition program highlighting significant actions, achievements, anniversaries, etc; and, conducts exit interviews with all members who resign to determine the reasons for leaving.
FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE
The members of this committee devise and execute means of promoting fellowship; through rotating arrangements to ensure that members get to know each other; plan and conduct at least one trip or social event for members, partners, friends and family; organize activities with other Rotary clubs such as:
GOLF DAY OUTING
The committee organizes the annual golf outing for club members, which is usually held the second Wednesday of June.
SKI DAY OUTING
Committee members organize the annual March outing and coordinate with other clubs in the local area.
FIRST THURSDAYS
Committee members select a local establishment for fellowship at 5pm.
HONOR GUARD COMMITTEE
Members of this committee represent the club at funeral services for club members.
ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR
The President names the recipient of the Rotarian of the Year Award at his/her final meeting.
SERVICE PROJECTS
ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY
The committee organizes and arranges the annual Adopt-A-Highway cleanup of the section of Interstate 87 between Exits 37 and 38 during late April or early May.
ALTERNATIVE BREAK
This committee organizes a ‘helping hand’ day in the community during the college’s March break.
AT-RISK CHILDREN PROGRAM COMMITTEE
Club members work to assist at-risk children in the community (abuse, neglect, bullying).
BEARTOWN CLEANUP
Club members spend a morning attending to the trails and to the lodge.
BED RACE
The committee organizes this mid-winter fundraiser in February – World Peace & Understanding Month (anniversary of the founding of Rotary) – bringing the community and the Plattsburgh State Campus together for a morning of fun and festivities.
CENTENNIAL PROJECT COMMITTEE – ad hoc
Committee members develop plans and arrange for installation of a gazebo constructed at Old Base Marina in honor of RI's 100th anniversary (2005).
CV-TEC HOUSE
The Plattsburgh Rotary Club provides the financial support for the construction of a house by students attending CV-TEC. Once complete the CV-TEC House Committee coordinates the construction and sale of the house in the local area.
FISHING TOURNAMENT
This active committee organizes the annual Rotary Fishing Classic on Lake Champlain, which provides funding for many community initiatives and grants to non-profit organizations through the Gifts Committee.
FOOD SHELF COMMITTEE
Members collect donations each week from club members. On the last Wednesday of each month, two committee members organize a special Food Help Day collection. The donations are then distributed between the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and the Interfaith Food Shelf.
SMALL GIFTS COMMITTEE
The committee review requests for funding as submitted by external sources and present its recommendations to the Board of Directors for gifts not to exceed $500.
HOLIDAY GIFTS
The committee arranges for club members to donate toys through the Christmas Bureau.
ROTARY RADIO DAY COMMITTTEE
This committee organizes this annual fundraising event, which is aired on WIRY in the spring which raises funds given to other service organizations as grants through the Gifts Committee.
RODUCKY DERBY COMMITTEE
Committee members organize this annual fall fundraising event which raises funds given to other organizations as grants through the Gifts Committee. It also promotes member participation in the sale of the rubber ducks to individuals and businesses.
SENIOR CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE
This committee initiates various activities through the club to assist senior citizens in the community.
YOUTH MENTORING ACTIVITIES
This committee coordinates interaction between Rotarians and area students to discuss career goals. Members also coordinate the selection of high school graduates and/or college students to attend the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Seminar and other Districtwide events.
ROTARY FOUNDATION
ROTARY FOUNDATION COMMITTEE
The mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Members promote The Rotary Foundation and encourage membership participation in EREY, recruit at least one new Benefactor each year, coordinate with the Public Relations Committee to promote TRF outside of the club, and administer the Ambassadorial Scholar Program.
ANNUAL
Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund through the Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) initiative are the primary source of funding for Foundation programs, which cover more than 160 countries and geographical areas on seven continents.
PERMANENT
This fund enables individuals to combine their gifts into a significant force to address the world’s greatest needs for generations to come. This is the Endowment Fund of The Rotary Foundation. Planned Giving includes the Benefactor program.
POLIOPLUS
Members develop and coordinate the club's involvement in the PolioPlus Program – Rotary International’s effort to eradicate polio from the world.
GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE COMMITTEE
The committee encourages member participation in the GSE Program and organizes appropriate activities for GSE visitors to the club.
PAUL HARRIS AWARD COMMITTEE
Members of this committee recommend to the Board the names of the recipients of the annual Paul Harris Award, who are members of the Club and have contributed to Rotary’s mission through service at the local, national and/or international level.
ROTARACT COMMITTEE
This committee works with the Rotaract club at SUNY Plattsburgh in various service projects and provides advice and support to the students to promote international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service.
RYLA – ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP
The committee works in conjunction with the Districtwide event to solicit youth leaders to participate in the annual weekend-long workshop to develop their skills and return to their secondary school and community as a leader of tomorrow.
WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE
This committee selects international service projects for our club and members and at least one representative attends the bi-monthly District meetings in Cornwall, Ontario.
YOUTH EXCHANGE COMMITTEE
The committee coordinates the local youth exchange program with the District committee, both inbound and outbound.
CLUB PUBLIC RELATIONS
PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE
The Public Relations Committee provides the media and general public with information regarding the club including its history, objects and scope on a regular basis. It also oversees the club’s website and the Bulletin (the weekly newsletter sent to all club members, nearby rotary clubs and others in the community and posted on the website).
