Plattsburgh Rotary Club “Roducky Derby” Makes Successful Impact Over $5,000 netted for local community projects
PLATTSBURGH, NY – On Saturday, Sept. 12, the Plattsburgh Rotary Club of Plattsburgh hosted the 10th annual Roducky Derby during the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Weekend. With over 800 little yellow “roduckies” competing for a list of 15 prizes donated from local businesses, the Derby was a spectacle for children and adults alike. Thanks to Jerry Marking of the Plattsburgh City Fire Department, the sidewalk behind Macdonough Monument was transformed into a manmade river. Hundreds of colored roduckies, adopted by many generous community members, were sent cascading down the hill to compete for the top prizes. The winner of the coveted Roducky Derby corporate duck race, AAA Northway, will have the honor of displaying the “Roducky Cup” at its office. Cathy Forget of AAA Northway and Rotary Club member, celebrated her win saying, “AAA Northway was pleased to participate in this year’s corporate Roducky Derby race and very excited to learn our duck was the winner! As a company that prides itself in community involvement, we will proudly display the trophy in the center of our office for all to see! Our duck trained hard, over the last year, to improve her swimming technique and it paid off!” WPTZ, NewsChannel 5 and the Plattsburgh Rotary Club were the contributors of first prize, four tickets to the “Regis & Kelly Show.” These tickets, along with transportation and lodging, were won by top roducky Lori Mathieu of Plattsburgh. Second Place went to Matthew Katz of Plattsburgh who won a Sterling Silver Bracelet courtesy of Kneucraft Jewelry. Third Place, a Sirius Radio donated by a Rotarian, was awarded to Michelle Dragoon of Plattsburgh. NBT Bank contributed a $100 Savings Bond that was won by Kezia Giddings of Plattsburgh who adopted the fourth place roducky.
In all, 15 prizes, donated by business sponsors, were given away. Other sponsors included Dawn’s Furniture Gallery, Plattsburgh YMCA, Champlain National Bank, Punki’s, UFirst Federal Credit Union, Lakeshore Candy, Country Expressions, Meadowbrook Healthcare, and HSBC Bank. The members of the Plattsburgh Rotary Roducky Derby Committee would like to thank all of the local businesses and individuals who supported this wonderful event by purchasing individual and corporate roduckies. A special thank you to Walmart for allowing the Plattsburgh Rotary Club to sell ducks at the store prior to the event, the Press-Republican for providing printing services, Rei Medina and Brian Latulippe for assisting with the Roducky mascot, and Alexis Marking for acting as the duck’s assistant. Roducky Derby chairperson Ellen Bouchard said, “We appreciate the generous support of the community for our duck race, as it allows Rotary to support our many world and community projects.” Overall, the 10th annual Roducky Derby raised approximately $5,400 to be used by the Plattsburgh Noon Rotary Club for charitable community projects. The club supports many charitable local organizations including the Clinton County Christmas Bureau, the YMCA, the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Committee, the North Country Mission of Hope, and the Boy and Girl Scouts.
