Plattsburgh Rotary Club “Roducky Derby” Makes Successful Impact
PLATTSBURGH, NY – The 13th annual Roducky Derby raised more than $8,000 for charitable community projects. The Rotary Club of Plattsburgh held the annual derby during the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Weekend, on Saturday, Sept. 10. With more than 1,000 yellow “roduckies” competing for a list of 17 prizes donated from local businesses, the derby was a spectacle for children and adults alike. Thanks to the Plattsburgh City Fire Department and members of the Rotary club, the sidewalk behind Macdonough Monument was transformed into a manmade river. Hundreds of colored roduckies, adopted by many generous community members, were sent cascading down the hill to compete for the top prizes. The winner of the coveted Roducky Derby corporate duck race, Donlan & Barcomb, will have the honor of displaying the “Roducky Cup” at its office. Bob Donlan of Donlan & Barcomb and a Rotary Club member celebrated his win saying, “Donlan & Barcomb was pleased to participate in this year’s corporate Roducky Derby race and very excited to learn our duck was the winner! As a company that prides itself in community involvement, we will proudly display the trophy in the center of our office for all to see! Our duck trained hard, over the last year, to improve its swimming technique, and it paid off!” WPTZ - NewsChannel 5 and the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh were the contributors of the first place prize – four tickets to the “Regis & Kelly Show.” These tickets, along with transportation and lodging, were won by top roducky Teresa Mahoney of Plattsburgh.
Third Place, a diamond journey necklace donated by Kneucraft Jewelers, was awarded to Alex Brienza of Plattsburgh. MaryAnne Bukolt-Ryder, attorney, contributed a 32” Flat Screen TV that was won by Lauren Cross of Plattsburgh for her fourth place roducky finish. In all, 17 prizes, donated by business sponsors, were given away. Other sponsors included Dawn’s Furniture Gallery, Fred Villari Studios, Charles Paepke, OD, FAAO, Punki’s Shear Perfection, NBT Bank, Country Expression Flowers & Gifts, Lakeshore Candy, Plattsburgh YMCA, UFirst Federal Credit Union, and Iris’ Cafe. The members of the Plattsburgh Rotary Roducky Derby Committee would like to thank all of the local businesses and individuals who supported this wonderful event by purchasing individual and corporate roduckies. A special thank you to Champlain Centre and Sam’s Club for allowing the Plattsburgh Rotary Club to sell ducks at their locations prior to the event and Kevin Killeen from the Plattsburgh YMCA for assisting with the Roducky mascot. Roducky Derby chairperson Ellen Bouchard said, “We appreciate the generous support of the community for our duck race, as it allows Rotary to support our many world and community projects.” Overall, the 13th annual Roducky Derby raised approximately $8,000 to be used by the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh for charitable community projects. The club supports many charitable local organizations including the Clinton County Christmas Bureau, the YMCA, the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Committee, the North Country Mission of Hope, and the Boy and Girl Scouts.
