International Service Committee

In the INTERNATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEE, members share ideas and projects which they believe would have interest to our club members and engage them in serving beyond Plattsburgh and North America. Understanding how District Grants and Global Grants can leverage our donations is key to more successful and sustainable projects!  

In the 1980s, our 3-H Grant in Ecuador to sustain farming was spear-headed by three of our mambers: George Burrell, Karl Kramer and Ralph Hunkins.  They were on-site working with the farmers and successfully provided a sustainable terrace-farming program in the region.

In 2008-2010, two of our club members (Marty Mannix & Bonnie Black) who had been highly engaged with the North Country Mission of Hope wich was serving in Chiquilistagua, Nicaragua - an extremely poor region.  With the installation of over 200 latrines, communities had access to sanitation facilities as did a number of schools, allowing better attendance due to decrease of gastrointestinal diseases and full school days (girls were leaving midday to walk home to relieve themselves).  At the end of the 2-year Global Grant throught The Rotary Foundation plus funding from our Club, the Managua Club and the Bergen-Highlands (NJ) Club, a video was made of the beneficiaries reactions to having these santitation facilities.  Even if you couldn't understand Spanish, the smiles of joy on their faces said it all!  All but one of the latrines were functioning well and, when the one was discovered, it was allocated to another group of families who now have their latrine and are very pleased.

Our Club has also supported the Blanket Project in Ukraine since the war with Russia began in the early 2020s, responding to our District's request to be involved with the Arnprior Club's (ON) initiative.  We initiated a 'matching' campaign so that we would be able to enhance the Club's budgeted amount and readidly raised the $2,500.
